SHUTTER OPTIONS

There are several factors which will determine what type of shutters you consider. There are several factors which will determine what type of shutters you consider. These include the look, from both inside and outside, how much light you want to be able to block, the material and, of course, cost.

Shutters are mounted on a frame. The frame may be recessed into a window cavity, or it may extend into the room. More rare in the US are external shutters, though "storm" shutters are used in storm-prone areas and are made from metal or solid wood. Rolling shutters can be seen on storefronts. These are interlocking metal "louvres" which come together to block everything. Home shutters work in much the same way.

Marsha Shaul, Silverline Specialties "When you walk into a room with custom shutters, there is a sort of subconscious upgrading of the home in your mind. Nothing necessarily overt; just a subtle sense of substance and style."

Shutters are used for both privacy and light control. Most shutters are comprised of a series of slats, called "louvres" which can be tilted using a rod, string or other device. In some rare cases, shutter louvres can be opened and closed individually, but these are normally found in very old (19th century and earlier) homes. In some warmer climates, shutters may actually take the place of windows.

The wider the louvre, the fewer are needed to close an openinig. The wider the louvre, the fewer are needed to close an openinig. While this may not appear important at first glance, consider the view from inside. When looking through the louvres to the outide, the mind needs to literally "assemble" the picture it sees between each louvre. The more louvres one has, the longer it takes for the eyes to adjust. Louvres normally come in sizes ranging from ½-inch to 4-inch and larger.

Louvre thickness or density will help determine how much light (and privacy) is afforded by the blinds. A blind can act as a "dimmer" or a complete light "block".

Rick Shaul, Silverline Specialties"A popular legend among designers is that shutters were first designed by Philipe Louvrier for King Louis XIV of Frane to enable the monarch to watch his court without himself being seen. Having installed the system, the unfortunate Louvrier was despensed with, leaving his family pensioned and his name on his product. In fact, the first recorded use of a shutter-like device was in ancient Rome, where a simple rock would be placed in a room opening and tilted to allow or block the light. Simple, but probably the ancestor of the modern blind."
